Abstract

Introduction: Malaria is a potentially lethal acute febrile disease caused by parasites transmitted to humans by the bite of Anopheles mosquitoes. Of the 249 million cases of malaria registered in 2022, most of them occurred in children under five years of age in sub-Saharan Africa. Non-falciparum malaria, caused by the species Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium knowlesi, is less documented in the international literature.

Objective: describe the presence of complications in the patients studied and determine what factors can intervene in their prevalence.

Methods: An observational study of 91 adult patients with imported non-falciparum malaria, admitted to the Department of Medicine, of the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine, was carried out during the period from December 1996 to December 2017. The data were processed in a Microsoft Excel database and then analyzed in the statistical program SPSS 11.5.

Results: Male patients predominated, with a mean of 37.8 years old. 38.5 % of the patients came from the region of the Americas and 86.8 % were Plasmodium vivax. The response to treatment was excellent with combined schemes based mainly on chloroquine. Twelve percent of the patients presented some type of complication. Complications were more prevalente in the presence of some variables. Conclusions: Malaria caused by non-falciparum species is an important cause of malaria, so its identification is necessary for appropiate therapeitic management.ther factors.
