Abstract

Introduction: In December 2019, an outbreak of interstitial pneumonia caused by a new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) was reported in the city of Wuhan (China), characterized by a wide spectrum of clinical forms of presentation. It is necessary to identify those patients with a higher probability of developing complications for their prevention. The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), C-reactive protein (ProtCR), the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and ferritin have taken interest as Serum biomarkers to define severity.

Objective: Describe the behavior of inflammatory markers in patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 at the Pedro Kouri Institute of Tropical Medicine, and analyze their possible correlation with clinical severity during SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Method: A retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out, where the records of 94 patients admitted to the Pedro Kouri Institute were reviewed, including the inflammatory markers described above. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to the severity of their evolution.

Results: 50 samples from severe patients and 44 samples from mild and moderate patients were analyzed. An increase in inflammatory markers (ProtCR, LDH, INL, Ferritin) was observed, predominantly in the group of patients with severe evolution, with a peak of elevation in the second week.

Conclusions: This work confirms the importance of using inflammatory markers as a routine laboratory test in patients with suspected COVID-19 and in those diagnosed with the disease.
