Relationship between symptoms and signs present in COVID-19 and in post-COVID-19 syndrome, Santiago de Cuba, 2020

Abstract

Introduction: Despite multiple studies on the manifestations of COVID-19 in the province of Santiago de Cuba, post-COVID-19 symptoms and signs in that population have not yet been studied.

Objective: To describe the relationship between the symptoms and signs present during and after COVID-19 in patients from a health area in Santiago de Cuba province.

Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2020 until January 2021 in the population of confirmed COVID-19 cases from the Armando García Aspurú Polyclinic in Santiago de Cuba, who presented some post-COVID-19 symptoms. A stratified random sampling by age and sex was implemented, with a fixed assignment of 34 cases across 20 strata, for a total of 680 subjects included. The variables were sex, age and the symptoms and signs present during and after COVID-19. The information was obtained through interviews, and the statistical analysis was performed in an implicative manner.

Results: The conjunction of the symptoms headache, fatigue, confusion and fever was observed during the disease and likewise the coexistence of myalgia, loss of taste and smell, nasal congestion and sore throat during the disease in relation to dizziness, headache and palpitations in post-COVID-19.

Conclusions: The most common post-COVID-19 symptoms were myalgia and headache in women, and arthralgia, anxiety, fatigue, and insomnia in older adults. The persistence of symptoms specific to the same organ system beyond the acute period and throughout the illness was inconsistent.
