Clinical Ultrasound Proficiencies in the Time of COVID-19

Abstract

Introduction: With the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a recognized need to promote the use of clinical ultrasound to inform decision-making in the management of critically ill patients.

Objectives: To conduct a literature review to support the importance of developing proficiency in clinical ultrasound for intensive care specialists, to facilitate early identification, classification, and prognosis of SARS-CoV-2 disease.

Methods: A review of 32 scientific articles from journals indexed in PubMed (Medline), Scopus, SciELO, and Medscape databases from 2017 to 2022 was conducted.

Information, Analysis, and Synthesis: Emergency ultrasonography is considered a viable option for monitoring COVID-19 patients, offering superior sensitivity, versatility, and ease of sterilization compared to the stethoscope and chest radiography. It is also similar to computed tomography. In Cuba, the need for the incorporation of POCUS into the curriculum of intensive care specialists is recognized, as evidenced in this latest pandemic. However, it is not yet part of the curriculum for professionals dedicated to the care of critically ill patients, and its use in intensive care units is not protocolized.

Conclusions: Numerous studies support the undeniable benefits of mastering competencies in clinical ultrasound to intensive care specialists, mainly to determine the severity of the condition and promptly initiate management and treatment in patients with COVID-19.
