Abstract

Introduction: Coinfection with SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2) and Mycoplasma pneumoniae may be a significant factor in the clinical course of COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019). While bacterial coinfection has been reported in Cuban patients with COVID-19, the occurrence of coinfection with Mycoplasma pneumoniae remains unknown.

Objective: To describe the frequency of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Methods: A descriptive study was conducted to detect Mycoplasma pneumoniae using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on 200 clinical pharyngeal swab samples from patients with COVID-19.

Results: A positivity rate of 1.5% (3/200) for Mycoplasma pneumoniae was found in the analyzed samples; one case involved a male patient and two involved female patients, with ages ranging from 19 to 59 years.

Conclusions: The detection of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in adult patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection, albeit at a low frequency, suggests the presence of this pathogen as a secondary infection in patients with COVID-19.
