Abstract

Introduction: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis (TB) coinfection significantly impacts the health of affected patients and influences the management of medical care protocols for adults with these infections.

Objective: To characterize the impact, current situation, and associated factors regarding HIV and TB coinfection in adult patients in Ecuador.

Methods: A literature review was conducted using search engines such as Google and Google Scholar, as well as databases including PubMed, Cochrane, SciELO, and Redalyc, among others. The search was limited to the last 10 years, although some older, classic studies on the subject were also considered.

Results: Elements regarding the current situation of coinfection in Ecuador are addressed from an integrative perspective, fulfilling the proposed objectives.

Conclusions: HIV and TB coinfection presents a multifactorial challenge that varies by continent, with differing outcomes regarding prevention and treatment methods. In Ecuador, the rise in cases highlights the need to strengthen detection and control efforts leading into 2025. This study underscores the importance of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to refining medical care protocols for adults with this coinfection.
