Rhino-Orbital Mucormycosis in a Diabetic Patient

Introduction: Mucormycosis is an opportunistic, angioinvasive fungal infection; the rhino-orbito-cerebral form is the most frequent and carries the highest mortality rate.
Objective: To present a case of mucormycosis with periorbital involvement.
Case report: A 44-year-old female patient presented with toothache in the right upper jaw, followed by facial edema and anesthesia, periorbital involvement, and severe eye pain. Despite receiving antibiotic treatment at various healthcare centers, her clinical condition deteriorated; she was subsequently referred to a higher-complexity hospital in Barranquilla, where type 2 diabetes mellitus was diagnosed. Later, following evaluation by the Infectious Diseases Service and histopathological analysis, a diagnosis of rhino-orbital mucormycosis was confirmed. This condition is aggressive and potentially fatal if not detected early.
Conclusions: It is essential to implement early detection strategies based on local epidemiology, individual risk factors, and initial clinical manifestations.
