Myiasis in Ecuador: Review of the Literature and Perspectives for its Treatment

Introduction: Myiasis, a parasitic infestation caused by fly larvae, has various clinical manifestations and a complex life cycle. Although many species of flies can cause myiasis, those mainly responsible in humans and animals belong to the families Oestridae, Calliphoridae and Sarcophagidae. Dermatobia hominis, belonging to the Oestridae family, stands out among them as the main causal agent, especially in tropical and subtropical areas of Central and South America.
Objective: To compile and analyze the existing literature on myiasis in the context of the epidemiology of Ecuador, highlighting its impact on public health and the need to understand its life cycle, diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
Methods: Articles published between 2004 and 2023 in English, Portuguese and Spanish were selected, using search terms obtained from the Medical Subject Headings. Studies that addressed clinical cases, epidemiology, methods of diagnosis and treatment of myiasis were included, and 20 articles were reviewed to extract relevant information.
Results: The main results revealed that myiasis is a relevant health problem in Ecuador, with a higher incidence in certain demographic groups and geographic regions.
Conclusions: The importance of early diagnosis, timely treatment and prevention in reducing serious complications was highlighted, as well as the need for future research to improve treatments and prevention of myiasis in endemic areas.
