Characterization of threshold cycle values in waves of COVID-19 in the province of Villa Clara, Cuba
Keywords:
RT-PCR SARS-CoV-2, threshold cycle, waves.Abstract
Introduction: In COVID-19 there is an exponential increase in cases called waves, the causative agent, SARS-CoV-2, is diagnosed by RT-PCR, the positive result of this test is expressed in threshold cycle values. In Cuba, no studies have been carried out that relate the value of the threshold cycle with the waves.
Objective: To characterize of threshold cycle values in waves of COVID-19 in the province of Villa Clara
Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive observational study, comprised 1679 positive samples by RT-PCR-SARS-CoV-2 in real time belonging to symptomatic and asymptomatic patients from Villa Clara, from March 2020 to February 2021. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS. version 15.
Results: Three waves occurred with maximum peaks in April 2020 with a frequency of 217 (12.9%) cases, August 2020, with 40 (2.4%), and January 2021 with 1,422 (84.7%). The first wave the mean was 29.2 and the median 32.0, the second the mean 26.6 and the median 27.0. The third wave had the lowest value of the mean 25.8 and the median 26.5. The medians of the Ct distributions in the three waves varied with a significance level of 5% [Median test for independent samples p<0.05]. In the month of November, 50% of the patients presented a Ct <23.2, coinciding with the beginning of the third wave, the one with the highest magnitude.
Conclusions: The decreasing value of the median of the threshold cycle preceded the months of the waves, with emphasis on the third.
